The Pop Art Movement that emerged in the U.K. and U.S. during the mid- to late- 50's challenged traditional fine art by including imagery from popular/mass culture. In this assignment students merged contemporary pop culture with techniques and styles influenced by their study of prolific Pop Artists, Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

Project | 02 Aminah Robinson Inspired Digital Book

Aminah Robinson incorporated many found objects in her mixed media pieces. Many works are books that tell both her history and stories that were passed down through her family. Students channeled Aminah's style into the virtual world to create digital books telling their pandemic story.

Project | 03 Modigliani Inspired Portraits
​
Amedeo Modigliani painted haunting portraits showcasing stylized, elongated necks and faces often featuring blank eyes. Students manipulated proportion in the oil pastel portraits they created to mimic characteristics identified in their study of the artist.

Students used self selected mediums to explore the work of various artists through the creation of a visual biography and an original work inspired by the artist.

Project | 06 Illuminated Letters

Prior to the invention of the printing press, artisans handmade manuscripts and books that featured elaborate decorations, known as illuminations, often surrounding the first letter of a page, Colored inks and gold or silver leaf were used in the elaborate decorations. Students created modern adaptations using ink and colored pencils.

Project | 07 Mixed Media Surrealism

Surrealism focused on releasing uninhibited creativity, by tapping into the unconscious mind. Many surrealist pieces show otherworldly, dream-like images full of symbolism and incorporate collaged images. Students used a combination of collage and drawing to release to subconscious of the figures they created.

Students foraged for nature materials that they then combined and arranged to create a portrait.

Project | 09 Japanese Notan
​
Notan is a Japanese design concept that uses the interplay of value and space to create the imagery and composition of a piece. Students utilized cut paper art to create compositions using mirror images showcasing value and positive and negative space.

Project | 10 Aaron Douglas Inspired Painting
​
Aaron Douglas was an American painter, illustrator and visual arts educator who played a major role in the Harlem Renaissance. His work utilized African-centric imagery that addressed social issues around race and segregation. Students adapted elements from Aaron Douglas' work including faceless silhouette like figures to create their original mixed media paintings.

Project | 11 Sun-catcher Bugs

Students learned about different types of bugs and beetles. They then used laminate scraps placed over templates of half a bug. After tracing the lines of their "half bug" they then folded them in half and pressed to complete their symmetrical bug. After students applied "homemade glue paint" to add sheen and color to their bugs.

Project | 12 Cave Installation

Students constructed a cave installation using cardboard. They then created 3D geodes using a variety of materials and cave drawings using charcoal to line the inside of the cave.
